Zomato has been in the news lately mainly due to the frequent appearance of Deepinder Goyal on Television and because of its marketing. A few days ago they had posted an ad on a highway titled as “MC. BC.” meaning “Mac and Cheese” and “Butter chicken” which attracted lot of criticism from the fans. But recently, they have done something through their advertisment which appeared heartwarming on the surface only to create mystery later on.

Zomato recently published a front page advertisment on Bengalore Times, where they acknowledged India’s highest tipper on Zomato.

The advertisment reads “This Ad is for Umang From Bengaluru…to thank and congratulate them on being India’s highest tipper on Zomato in 2024. They tipped delivery partners a total of Rs 2,03,885. Yes 2,03,885.”

Seeing the heartfelt generosity of the user Umang, Zomato announced that it will offer a whooping 50% discount to Umang and to others also on various time slots supposedly for the Bengaluru region.

Pronounce Mistake or “Wolf Gupta” like Mystery From Zomato?

The post went viral on Linkedin and users mentioned in the comment section that although Zomato acknowleged a person named “Umang”, they referred to him as “They”, sparking mystery that may be some organization led by Umang tipped the money.

However, another user brought spotlight on the fact that the tip off money Rs 2,03,885 was extremely huge and that even if “Umang” would have tipped the highest amount on every order, he still would have to order nearly 2000 times in 2024 in order to reach the tipping amount Rs 2,03,885.

Seeing the above calculation, another user mentioned that it wouldn’t be a surprise if the tipper is Wolf Gupta. Wolf Gupta is a fictional character who was marketed heavily with deception in the edtech sector few years back. The marketing althought went viral for many months but soon the ed tech company who marketed it was forced to remove the claims of the fictional character “Wolf Gupta”

The majority of comments hinted that people didn’t like the ad for various reasons. Some argued that it was a clever marketing strategy which promoted tipping culture while others opined that Zomato used a fictional character in order to cook a story to promote its discount sale offer so that people would order more.
