Its not uncommon in India that youngsters aspire to join the Indian army. Life in defence offers not only pride and respect but also a respectable lifestyle, perks and other benefits to the family. However, things may not be so rosy as it appears from outside.

In a revealing Jist Breaking Down Podcast episode, Kavish Agarwal, a retired Army Major who served as JAG in the Indian Army, talked about some pressing issues that impact the Indian soldiers. The candid discussion with him helped to shed light on the realities that our soldiers face. It had a stark contrast with all the privileges that the Indian army officers enjoy. The insights given by Major Agarwal revealed the multifaceted challenges that demand attention from authorities.

Major Kavish Agarwal on Officers Mess Unnecessary Expenditure

As highlighted by Major Agarwal, there are some extravagant expenditure issues in officers’ messes. It was argued by him that the mess’s lavishness is an unnecessary financial burden. It serves only a small number of Army officers. Adding further, he said, the messes get maintained by many full-time soldiers, and the costs of it are substantial. It raises concerns about resource allocation in the Army.

Major Agarwal said, altogether, the mess’s unnecessary expenses need to be managed. As suggested by him, there’s a need for an inclusive and economical approach that can benefit the broad army community instead of just a few privileged.

Major Kavish Agarwal on Lack of Vegetables & Fruits in Diet

Another major concern raised in the episode, through Major Agarwal, was the inadequate fruit and vegetable provision within the soldiers’ diet. He said that the current army diet doesn’t give adequate support to their mental and physical health despite the job requiring them to maintain a high fitness level.

Major Agarwal said the nutritious food options like vegetables, juices, and fruits in the Army’s diet are often unavailable or rare. It forces the soldiers to be reliant on alternatives that are less healthy. Such dietary oversight can impact the readiness and the long-term health of the soldiers.

Major Kavish Agarwal on Resignation Challenges

Major Agrawal further talked about the challenges that permanent medical officers face when they wish to resign. Unlike their civilian counterparts, the officers find themselves unable to leave their positions because they are bound by strict regulations. Such lack of flexibility leads to dissatisfaction and brings the feeling of entrapment. As per the Major, there is a need for policy reform that respects the medical personnel’s autonomy and career aspirations within the Army.

The revelations made by Major Agarwal call upon the critical examination of army practices and policies, with a focus on creating a supportive and equitable environment for all personnel. The insights received through the conversation with him in the episode are a sobering reminder of needed improvements to ensure the efficiency and welfare of those who serve us.
